Early morning today, November, 21, Youth Corp members serving
in Rivers state staged peace protests over unpaid of their ‘first
allowance’.
The Corpers have blocked the main entrance of the Rivers State
orientation camp preventing government officials from leaving and
entering.
It was understood that the military personnel on Camp were
sympathetic to the plight of the protesting youths – therefore they
allowed the protest to continue.
According to unconfirmed sources, NYSC officials announced to Corps
members that they won’t be able to pay their ‘first allowance’ in cash.
NYSC Orientation Camps for Batch ‘C’ corps members opened 4th November, 2014 – the camp closes on November, 25th.
Some Corpers members posted protests images on Twitter:
It would be recalled on September 30, 2014, federal lawmakers began
an inquest into the controversial N4, 000 online registration fee and
consequently urged NYSC to suspend the policy.
In a related development, NYSC member, Abayomi Isaac Oyebukola
accused of stealing N2.3m meant for 144 Corpers in Osun state has spoken
out.
