As Nigeria continues its fight against members of the radical Islamist sect, Boko Haram in the northeastern part of the country, two international organizations have pledged their support to the Federal Government.
This was made known to Nigerian Pilot correspondent on Wednesday in Lagos, by the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for West Africa, Mohamed Ibn Chambas.
Chambas said the United Nations (UN) and the African Union (AU) assured the Nigerian government of its willingness to closely support the fight against Boko Haram.
He further disclosed that the international communities will properly equipped the 8, 700 troops that would be deployed to fight the terrorists in West and Central Africa.
According to him, the UN, AU and international partners met last month at two separate meetings to deliberate on the modalities for creating a multi-national joint taskforce that would help halt the scourge of Boko Haram in the North-Eastern part of Nigeria.
“The time has now come for us all to come all-out to stop Boko Haram activities in our communities. The fight against Boko Haram has become an international fight, an African fight for sure, and will be anchored around the Lake Chad Basin Commission but with support from us all. One of the top priorities of the UN today is the fight against Boko Haram. Boko Haram is not just a problem in Nigeria but has become an international concern. As we all know today, Boko Haram has also taken its atrocities to Cameroon, Niger and Chad,” Chambas said.
Meanwhile, Ban Ki-moon, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, says the UN is closely monitoring developments related to the March 28 and April 11 polls and fully support the shift in dates.
Recall that the United Nations special representative and head of its West African office, Mohamed Ibn Chambas, had earlier expressed surprise over the inability of such revered Nigerian military to combat the terrorist sect Boko Haram.
