The Nigerian army reports it has flushed out terrorists from Gulak, in the Madagali LGA of Adamawa state.
Making the announcement via its Twitter account, the defence headquarters inform Bara, Gulani local government area of neighboring Yobe state, was cleansed of insurgents as well.Also, “many assorted arms, ammunition and vehicles are recovered or destroyed”.
Moreover, according to witness Edward, two airstrikes were carried out by Nigeria’s Alpha Jets againstBokoHaram positions in Madagali today. Additionally, eleven islamists were captured by Alpha near Dapchiri.
The liberation of Gulag comes one day after President Goodluck Jonathan visited the troops at Mubi in Adamawa state and at Baga in Borno state. Mubi and Baga, former strongholds of Boko Haram, were retaken by Nigerian troops about two weeks ago.
Ahead of elections, the government has apparently stepped up effort against the terror group with multiple towns liberated by soldiers.
It would be recalled that General Kenneth Minima, Nigeria’s Chief of Army Staff, on Februry 25, Wednesday, visited Baga town in Borno State. He said as the troops recaptured some territories from militants the displaced persons may decide to come back to their houses before the general polls which are rescheduled to March 28 and April 11.
However, the general elections had been postponed by six weeks for security reasons, particularly the Boko Haram insurgency. With the elections fast approaching, the Nigerian military have been fighting to rout the insurgents. With the help of troops from neigbouring countries, they have beensuccessful in recapturing some towns from the sect.
