Sitti Mtemvu Crowned Miss Tanzania
NEWLY-CROWNED Miss Tanzania, Sitti Mtemvu, poses with first runner-up Lillian Kamazima and second runner-up Jihan Dimachk, during the beauty pageant held in Dar es Salaam. SITTI Mtemvu won the coveted 2014 Miss Tanzania pageant crown in a colourful night at Mlimani City Hall in Dar es Salaam, becoming the 20th winner since the return of the national beauty pageant.
Wearing a sleeveless, pale green gown, the newest Miss Tanzania walked the runway with a wide smile and waved to a cheering crowd at Mlimani City, where the beauty pageant has been staged recently.
When she was announced the winner, Sitti, who is the daughter of Abbas Mtemvu, the Member of Parliament for Temeke in Dar es Salaam, was handed the crown from her predecessor Happyness Watimanywa.
On her way to the Miss Tanzania title, Sitti won both Miss Chang’ombe and Miss Temeke titles. By winning the crown, Miss Sitti will pocket 18m/-, among other perks that come with the crown.
She will also represent Tanzania in Miss World 2015. Pageant judges scored the 30 contestants based on a talent competition, a personal interview, their answers to an on-stage question, and their appearance in gowns and swimsuits. Lillian Kamazima was first runner-up while Jihhan Dimachk finished as second runner-up.
Dorice Mollel and Nasreen Abdul finished in fourth and fifth place respectively. The 30 contestants made their first appearance on the stage at 22:15hrs and performed the opening dance– Yemi Alade’s hit track Johnny, as designated by their trainer, Wanne Star. The dance lasted for five minutes.
The audience was then treated to a classic dance act performed by a group of six boys. After the thrilling show, each contestant appeared on the stage for the second time in an outfit of her own choosing.
The night was not short of entertainment while the aspiring queens went through a series of acts including, night wear, swimsuit and on-stage question sessions.
The event took place as planned after the Kisutu Resident Magistrate’s Court in the city rejected the application for temporary injunction presented by one of the founder of the gala, Prashant Patel. Patel had wanted his coorganiser, Hashim Lundenga, prohibited to conduct the beauty contest on grounds of breaching some agreement signed by the two parties.
In his ruling delivered last Tuesday, Senior Resident Magistrate Frank Moshi found no cogent reasons to warrant the suspension of the event.
He observed that if the competition would be halted, several people, not only the organisers, but also sponsors who have injected their money for preparations would be affected.
The history of Miss Tanzania started in the 1960s and the participants for the most part were from Dar es Salaam, the winners were however not sent to compete internationally.
In 1968, the government banned beauty contests in the country after advice from the ruling political party’s youth league citing it was not consistent with Tanzanian culture.
In 1994 when beauty contests were allowed, the country had its first Miss Tanzania, Aina Maeda, who competed in the Miss World.
Tanzania ended its decadelong drought of shining in international beauty contests in Miss World 2005, when Nancy Sumari was among the top 6 finalists and also crowned Miss World Africa. Nancy remains the only success story to write about as far as the country’s participation in Miss World is concerned.
