Prison BreakChaos In Kirikiri As Inmates Riot
A jail break was averted at the Kirikiri Prisons in Apapa, Lagos when some inmates reportedly expressed their displeasure with a wild protest
All hell was let loose at the Kirikiri Prisons in Apapa, Lagosyesterday, October 10, when a riot broke out in the facility.
The trouble was said to have been started when the outgoing Deputy Controller, Kayode Adeyemi gathered the inmates together to introduce his successor and the prisoners began to air their grievances towards the former and the way he had handled the affairs of the prison.
The situation quickly deteriorated and the prisoners reportedly started hurling stones at senior prison officials after which they held some people hostage and destroyed some offices within the premises.
Soldiers were quickly called to the scene after some of the inmates supposedly made attempts to escape.
Conflicting reports have it that 5 inmates, who tried to escape, were killed while some others who made it out were accosted by officers of the army.
No official confirmation of the incident has been issued by the prison management and the exact details of what occurred are still sketchy.
