The fire service said four storeys of the five-storey terraced house and the roof were affected by the blaze.
They tweeted: "More than 70 firefighters are dealing with the Wimpole Street fire in Marylebone. Nine people were led to safety from the building."

The fire was brought under control shortly before 6am but fire crews were expected to continue damping down and carry out salvage work throughout the morning.
London Fire Brigade Station Manager Jim Morford, who is at the scene, said: "When they arrived firefighters were confronted with a large fire in a terraced town house and crews have been working hard to stop it from spreading to neighbouring properties.
"Nine people have been led to safety and the buildings on either side of the affected house have been evacuated as a precaution.

The fire service said the blaze is now affecting four of the building's five storeys as well as the roof.
Two turntable ladders are being used to help fight the blaze from above, it added.
The cause of the fire is unknown.
