The incident happened at about 11:00 pm on Monday night.
According to The Nation’s report, Haruna, one of the security operatives working in the government house and attached to the 423 Battalion, Elele Barrack in Rivers State, was recently posted to Borno State.
Trouble was said to have started after Haruna arrived the Government House to collect his allowance before reporting to his new duty post but he was prevented from going into the premises by Shuaibu, his superior.
An argument ensued and in the process, Haruna grabbed Shauibu’s rifle and shot him.
A security source said: “Haruna who was already fuming tried in vain to gain access to the Government House. He engaged his superior in a heated argument and grabbed a rifle and shot Shuaibu.”
An eyewitness who pleaded anonymity disclosed that Haruna attempted to flee the scene by boarding a tricycle popularly known as Keke NAPEP but he was intercepted by other policemen who had heard the gunshots.
The policemen initially did not know that the soldier has been killed. The Policemen immediately arrested the killer soldier and the tricycle driver,” he said.
Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Bayelsa State Command, Alex Akhigbe, said: “I am aware that there was an incident of that nature yesterday (Monday) night. It is purely a military affair and I will advise that you direct your enquiries to the military authorities if you want to get more details.”
