Members
of National Youth Service Corps, serving in Osun State, on Thursday
distributed exercise books to students of the Christ African Church
Middle School, Osogbo, as part of their community development service.
The President of the Gender Equality and Adult Education Community Development Service Group in Osogbo Local
Government Area, Mr. Solomon Adeleke, led other members of the group to distribute the books to the beneficiaries.
Adeleke said in his speech that the group decided to donate the books to encourage pupils to focus on their education.
A member
of the NYSC group, Juliet Adekagun, while addressing the beneficiaries
urged them to face their studies and shun anti social behaviors.
She said, “It is worrisome that some secondary school pupils, rather than face their studies, join secret cults.
“There
is no glorious future for cultists; most of them end up being killed
like goats and every student who wants to become somebody in life must
shun activities which can ruin their lives.”
Adekagun
also urged teachers to see themselves as very important parts of the
society, saying their duties had great impact on the society.
She urged parents to give their female children equal opportunity to quality education just like their male counterparts.
According
to Adekagun, giving quality education to female children will assist
the nation to eradicate illiteracy. She also advised women and men who
did not have opportunity to be educated in their youthful days to
embrace adult education, saying, “no time is too late to do the right
thing.”
One of
the beneficiaries, a Grade 7 pupil, Itunun Awoyemi, expressed
gratitude to the corps members for sacrificing part of their meager
allowances to purchase the books distributed to the pupils.
Another beneficiary, Abdulgafar Adeoyi, a Grade 9 pupil, also appreciated the gesture of the corps members.
He urged
wealthy Nigerians to emulate the corps members, who he said, sacrificed
to encourage the younger ones to continue with their education.
